6th International Conference on
BIOMASS FOR ENERGY

September 14-15, 2010
Kyiv, Ukraine

   Organized by:

  • Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • Scientific Engineering Centre “BIOMASS”.

   Supported by:

  • National Agency of Ukraine for Effective Energy Use;
  • Ministry of Fuel and Energy of Ukraine
  • Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine
  • Committee of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Fuel and Energy, Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Safety

   Chairman's message

We are very glad to invite all the representatives of Biomass Community to the 6th International Conference on Biomass for Energy.

Conferences held in 2002-2009 generated great interest in Ukraine and abroad. About 200 participants including 50 attendees from Europe and the USA took part in each forum.

During 2005-2010 price of natural gas in Ukraine has been rising drastically (from 61 to 305 $/1000 m3). As a result, some sectors of the national economy appeared on the verge of viability. Such situation clearly demonstrates urgent necessity of using alternative and renewable energy sources.

Among the renewable energy sources, biomass can play the leading part in replacement of natural gas and other fossil fuels. Ukraine has quite a big potential of biomass available for energy production (19-23 mtoe/yr). Utilization of the biomass potential for energy purposes can cover about 14% of the Ukraine's energy demand.

At present Ukraine’s state policy regarding the bioenergy sector development is expressed in two laws which were adopted in 2009: regarding the "green" tariff and the biofuels. Specifically, the minimal fixed “green” tariff for biomass power plants is 12.4 € cents/kWh, and this value is one of the highest in Europe.

We are sure that the 6th Conference will facilitate practical realization of biomass-to-energy technologies in Ukraine and promote a fruitful cooperation between Ukrainian and foreign scientists, experts and businessmen in this field.

Conference Chairman,
Academician of NAS of Ukraine,
Anatoliy Dolinsky

   Programme

The two-day Conference programme includes:

  • Plenary lectures

  • Oral and poster presentations

  • Round tables and seminars

   Topics

1. Biomass resources: availability andcost of resources; technical and logistical issues; environmental impact. Production,
pretreatment, supply and logistics of feedstock from conventional agriculture, forestry, animal residues, processing industry
and the biodegradable fraction of MSW streams. Research on energy crops.

2. Research and development of bioenergy technologies: combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion,
extraction and utilisation of landfill gas, co-combustion of biomass with traditional fuels. Production of liquid biofuels
    (biodiesel, bioethanol).

3. Demonstration and market implementation of biomass-to-energy technologies.

4. Strategy and policy issues: international, national, regional and local policies and strategies. Sustainability criteria and
    certification issues.

5. Economic and environmental issues of bioenergy technologies: financing of bioenergy projects, socio-economic impact,
    reduction of CO2 emission.

   Purpose of the conference

To encourage the use of biomass for energy production and promote sustainable development of bioenergy technologies in Ukraine.

   Working languages

   Conference venue

The 6th International Conference on Biomass for Energy will be held at premises belonging to the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (55, Vladimirskaya str.). Located in the city centre the Conference facility will give the participants a good opportunity to combine constructive work with exploring the cultural and historical treasures of Kyiv - the city with more than a 1500-year history.
